“”Yes,’ responded Abbot, “if she were a nice, pretty child,
one might compassionate her forlornness; but one really cannot care for such a
little toad as that” (77).
Jane has always been characterized as a simple and plain
character which does not compare much to her cousin Georgina who is known for
her blue eyes and curly hair. In this quote the maids are discussing Jane’s
plain appearance and undesirable physical traits. The maids admit that it is
hard to show admiration or care for Jane because she is like that of a Toad.
This shows the theme of physical appearance in the novel. Jane is faced with
even more adversity due to her lack in looks although she has a striking
personality. Physical appearance is a major theme discussed in the novel and Bronte manages to display the corruption of physical appearance in today’s
society. Similar to Jane’s case, the celebrities that are often admired are
admired due to their looks but most can agree lack a true sense of personality.
