“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I
am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! – I have as much soul as you”.
Jane has always
been characterized as a simple and plain character thus how the saying “plain
Jane” could have arose. What I have always admired most about Bronte’s
characterization of Jane was that on the physical level Jane did not possess
many desirable traits, but had a personality as vibrant and defending as a fire. The quote above is a great expression of Jane's defending and strong
personality. Throughout her whole life she had been judged and condemned by her
looks and social status. Here we see Jane completely defend her life and
possess a trait not often given to woman when this novel was first published. I
believe Charlotte Bronte did a great job characterizing Jane into a character
the reader can learn and grow with. Another quote that displays Jane's softer
side includes: “He made me love him without looking at me”. Jane still has the
ability to be strong but also caring and soft when possible.
I really like the way you describe Jane and how you explained the quote. I think this is one of the best things Jane says its very powerful and can apply to present day.
ReplyDeleteI like that you took a different interpretation of Jane. When most people think of Jane, they think of "plain Jane", but she was much more than that. Maybe her looks were plain, but her words were not. Jane's words were very powerful for a women then, and now.
