“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human
being with an independent will” (144).
Charlotte Bronte said it best with this quote from Jane Eyre
as she ironically symbolized the human spirit as possessing more freedom than a
bird. What I liked most about the diction used in this quote was that it was
clever. Many people see birds as the universal symbol of freedom and often they
can be seen on many tattoos with relating quotes to freedom. This quote instead
suggests that birds are no more free than many of the nets that can catch them,
but the human spirit possess independent will. I like this quote because there
are many ways you can look at it based on the diction. The words “independent”,
“free”, and “ensnare” stand out the most.
